Mary Gitton

Mary Gitton was the daughter of Lewis Gitton I and Jane. She was not listed on the  Staten Island, New York census taken circa 1706 so she was apparently born sometime after circa 1706.

According to her father's will, written 1732 in New Castle Co., Delaware, Mary was married to a Vandegrift. Based on the known Vandegrifts in New Castle County at this time, she is believed to have been married to Leonard Vandegrift.

In Leonard Vandegrift's will, recorded in 1750, he named his wife as Sarah. The best guess at this time is that Mary died sometime between 1732 and 1750 and that Leonard may have married Mary's younger sister, Sarah Giton. Without additional information it is impossible to determine who the mother of Leonard's children were regardless of who the Sarah was in his will.

Leonard Vandegrift was the son of Christopher Vandegrift and was born circa 1700 in either New Castle Co., Delaware or Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. Leonard's grandparents were Leonard Vandegrift and Styntje Ellsworth of Bucks Co., Pennsylvania whose children all moved to New Castle Co., with the exception of their son Abraham.

February 1, 1743, Christopher's sons Abraham and John were born in 1725 and 1729. Leonard was appointed guardian to his brother John so he was of age in 1743 and most likely born in 1722.

We do not know exactly when Mary Giton was born but it would have been between 1706 and 1714. Mary's sister Sarah was a minor in 1732 when her father wrote his will so she would have been born in 1715 or perhaps later.
