Children of Stephen Neal and Ann

1. Stephen Neal was born in 1762 in Amelia County Virginia and died in 1801 in Pittsylvania County Virginia. He married Lucy Haskins, daughter of Thomas Haskins on December 2, 1784 in Charlotte County Virginia. Deed records indicate that Stephen moved to Pittsylvania County prior to 1786, soon after his marriage, and probably some 7 years before his father. Stephen died circa 1801 and on December 6, 1802 Lucy remarried to John Stone in Pittsylvania Co.

1. David Neal was born circa 1785 in Pittsylvania County Virginia and died there in 1815. He marrried Neilly S. Dickinson in 1806. David was a Lt. in a cavalry troop in the 42nd Regiment during the War of 1812.

5. Thomas David Neal was born on October 29, 1812 in Pittsylvania County Virginia and died on June 21, 1884 in Richmond Virginia. He married Louisiana Franklin Carter on December 29, 1836 in Pittsylvania Co. She was born on June 26, 1822 in Pittsylvania Co. and was the daughter of Samuel Carter and Elizabeth H. Bibb of Halifax County Virginia. Louisiana died on March 24, 1893.

Thomas was a pioneer in the tobacco business in Danville Virginia and was a director of the Richmond and Danville Railroad. He was a member of the City Council of Danville from the time it was incorporated in 1861. He was also a Lt. in the "Danville Blues" a volunteer company of light infantry organized in Danville in February of 1841.

The book, "Men, Places & Things" by Benjamin Simpson said the following about Thomas:

"Thos. D. Neal was one of the most public spirited men of his day. There was hardly an enterprise touching Danville and vicinity during his active career of which he was not either a pioneer or a promoter. As a railroad builder he was second only to Whitmell Tunstall. As a tobacconist he was easily first. When these are considered, it is no wonder that his sons, John C. and Col. James M. Neal have the same traits."

2. Thomas H. Neal was born circa 1788 in Pittsylvania County Virginia. He married Wilmouth M. Williams in Pittsylvania Co. in 1811.

2. William Neal was born circa 1764 in Amelia County Virginia. He married his first cousin Eleanor Neal, daughter of Thomas Neal and Mary Ann Stokes, on December 20, 1785 in Lunenburg County Virginia. Eleanor was born in 1766 in Amelia County Virginia. Little is known about William and Eleanor or their children. On March 9, 1819 they sold 497 acres in Halifax County Virginia for $3500. When William's brother Samuel died in 1854, his estate was divided between his brothers and sisters. The estate papers state that William was dead and that his children were unknown and resided outside of Virginia. It seems likely that when William and Eleanor sold their land in Halifax County that they left Virginia and had little or no contact with anyone after leaving.

3. Joel Neal was born circa 1766 in Amelia County Virginia. The first record available of him is where he witnessed a deed in Amelia County for his parents in 1792. When his brother Samuel died in 1854, his estate was divided between his brothers and sisters or their heirs but there is no mention of Joel so he apparently died before 1854 and left no children.

Joel owned 879 acres in Pittsylvania County Virginia, that he purchased in 1799, and other land and several negroes willed to him by his father Stephen.

4. Samuel Neal was born circa 1768 in Amelia County Virginia. Census and other records show that Samuel never married and that his sister Mary, or Polly as she was called, also never married and resided with Samuel. Pittsylvania death records states that Samuel died on July 16, 1854 at the age of 84 and that he was a farmer and that he was unmarried. His sister Polly Neal provided the information for the death record.

When Samuel died he had a considerable estate which included 200 acres in Pittsylvania County and 14 slaves. The estate was sold and a figure of $8,259.78 was quoted in 1869 which was probably the receipts of the sale before expenses. Samuel died intestate and since he had no direct heirs his estate was divided between his brothers and sisters and their heirs.

5. Simon Neal was born in 1770 in Amelia County Virginia. he married Nancy Royster, daughter of Nathaniel Royster, on January 25, 1800 in Halifax County Virginia. Nancy was born in 1780. Simon died prior to the 1860 census and Nancy sometime after the 1870 census.

1. Mary D. Neal was born in 1818 probably in Pittsylvania County Virginia. She married Thomas Haygood in 1836 in Pittsylvania Co. Census records show that Thomas was a grocer.

6. Joannah Neal was born circa 1773 in Amelia County Virginia. Her brother Samuel died in 1854 and his estate was divided between his brothers and sisters and their heirs. The papers state that Joannah Craddock was a sister of Samuel Neal and that she died prior to 1854 and that her children where unknown and resided outside of Virginia. Joannah's brother John Neal married Priscilla Craddock so it seems likely that the Craddock Joannah married was a brother or perhaps a cousin to Priscilla Craddock. Priscilla's sister Sarah also married a Stephen Neal.

7. John Neal

John Neal was born 1776 in Amelia Co., Virginia. He was the son of Stephen Neal and Ann. John moved with his parents from Amelia Co to Pittsylvania Co., Virginia circa 1793. He married Priscilla Craddock, daughter of John Craddock and Mary Hendricks, on March 8, 1801 in Pittsylvania Co.

     In 1819, John and Priscilla moved to Bath Co., Kentucky where Priscilla died in 1832. John then moved to nearby Nicholas Co., where he died in July of 1848.

     John married Eliza Ann Fletcher, probably around 1835. Eliza was born circa 1815 in Kentucky.

     In Chancery Papers recorded in Pittsylvania Co., Virginia from 1854 to 1869 pertaining to the disposition of the estate of John's brother Samuel Neal is an affidavit by William Powell dated July 5, 1858 in Nicholas Co., Ky. The affidavit names John Neal's 12 children and gives the married names of the five females and indicates that all 12 are living at that time.

     In the same Chancery Papers, dated June 15, 1869 the heirs of John Neal are listed and indicates that each of the 12 direct heirs were to receive $1204.08 with interest from December 8, 1856.

     Soon after John died in 1848, Eliza moved with her two sons, James and Thomas and two of her stepsons, Wellington and Armistead Neal to Cooper Co., Missouri where they lived during the 1850 census. They later moved to Pettis Co. and then Benton Co. Missouri. Thomas moved to Polk County Missouri.

1. Mary "Polly" Neal was born in 1802 in Pittsylvania County Virginia. She married Elisha Kersey on June 19, 1820 in Bath County Kentucky. He was born in 1799.
