Isaac Jetton

Isaac Jetton was the son of Zebulon Jetton and Mary and was born on October 30, 1813 in Tennessee. When he was one or two years old his parents moved to Caldwell County Kentucky. He married Susannah Agnes Davis on October 2, 1834 in Caldwell County.

The only known land records for Isaac is a deed dated September 2, 1836 where he purchased 200 acres of land on both sides of the Tradewater River from his father Zebulon for $300 and then sold the land to Isaac Shepherdson on September 5, 1837 for $300. Why he only owned the 200 acres for a year is not known but his father still owned at least 200 acres at this point so perhaps the family simply did not have the resources to farm that much land. We also know that Zebulon sold 200 acres in 1838 leaving the family with 89 acres, which may have been a more manageable amount of acreage or all the family needed to survive. One can only speculate on these matters but it may also be true that neither Zebulon or Isaac were farmers at heart.

It is difficult to determine from the 1840 census but the 1850 census show both Isaac and his father living in Caldwell County. We know from the 1860 census that Zebulon left Kentucky and moved to Lawrence County Missouri and we know from a letter Isaac wrote in 1860 to his father and siblings that  Isaac also left Kentucky. Isaac may have moved to Lawrence County with his father but if so he did not stay there and was in Arkansas in 1860. According to Isaac's letter, he had gone to Texas but when he wrote the letter in 1860 he was "living on the banks of the Ark River 12 miles below Vanburen [Crafford Co AR] at Colonel Burrows". Isaac's letter indicates that he had not seen or heard from his father and siblings since he went to Texas and missed them.

Exactly what Isaac was doing in Arkansas in 1860 or what happened to him and Susannah after that is not  clear. His son Thomas may have been in Lawrence County Missouri when he enlisted in the 1st Regiment of Arkansas Cavalry [Union] on September 10, 1862, however, the records also show he enlisted in Dallas County Missouri where his brother James enlisted in the same Regiment in May of 1862. If he was in Lawrence Co. was he with his parents or just visiting his grandfather Zebulon?  We know Thomas eventually lived in Dallas Co. Missouri, as well as other siblings, and went on furlough to Dallas County while serving in Fayetteville Arkansas in 1865. Thomas was not married in 1865 so it seems likely that he went on furlough to Dallas County where his parents lived. We can't be sure but hopefully Isaac was able to see his father again before his father was killed in 1865.

7. Isaac J. Jetton. An entry in his sister Sarah's bible states that he was born on February 12, 1853. The entry says Isaac J. Gaby Jetton. An entry, written by a different person, next to his name states that he married Susan Rains. If so, she probably was Joseph Rains' [Sarah Jetton's husband] sister. This is the only information available for him at this point.
